WILSON, Wyo. — A multiple-vehicle collision on Teton Pass on Monday, Dec. 23, resulted in one hospital visit and seven damaged vehicles, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP).
WHP Trooper Todd Baxter was on the scene on Monday afternoon, and spoke with Buckrail following the incident. According to Baxter, winter weather conditions had created a slushy roadway, causing a big slowdown on the west side of the summit. A Subaru came around the bend too quickly, not anticipating stopped traffic, and spun out as the driver tried to stop.
Spinning in multiple circles, the Subaru slid into other cars, which bumped into other vehicles in a domino effect, Baxter said. One driver approaching the collision site knew it would be impossible to avoid crashing, and elected to drive into a ditch instead.
All told, there was one injury reported in the collision, which Baxter said was “nothing too severe.” That individual was transported to the hospital without an ambulance. No further information regarding that individual’s condition is available at this time.
Seven cars were affected, with four requiring tows. Baxter estimates that a few of them were totaled. Many airbags were deployed.
“The big factor is just driving too fast for conditions,” Baxter said. “It’s not a straight road; you can’t see what’s coming down the pike until you get to it, so you just have to approach cautiously.”
