JACKSON HOLE, WYO –
UPDATE (12:33pm): Teton Pass has reopened. Keep in mind there is a scheduled closure for avalanche mitigation again tonight at 10pm (if not sooner due to weather).
Road conditions this morning are about what could have been expected as Jackson Hole is about midway through a four-day storm.
Teton Pass is closed with an estimated opening time of late morning. Avalanche mitigation early this morning brought down quite a bit of snow. Glory (1 foot across road) and Twin Slides (3 feet across road) both gave way. Driving around is not an option. Highway 31 through Swan Valley is closed this morning, as is Highway 33, both in Idaho.
The stretch of US 89 between Moose and Moran remains closed due to winter conditions.
All other roads are open and showing slick with snowfall and blowing snow.
Weather forecasters say expect light snow showers throughout the day today with steadier snow tonight through Tuesday. This system is expected to Wednesday night.
Avalanche hazard forecast for today in the Tetons is HIGH. Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Temperatures have steadily warmed since midnight on Friday, and they are starting out 10 degrees warmer than yesterday morning.
The combination of strong winds, abundant snowfall, ample snow available for transport and warming temperatures is the perfect recipe for avalanches. Skiers and riders entering steep, avalanche terrain will be very likely to trigger large loose snow sluffs and wind slabs. Natural activity will also be likely. The chance of triggering very large deep persistent slab avalanches will slowly be on the rise.
Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended during periods of high avalanche hazard. Great skiing and riding can easily be found in low consequence terrain. Keep a close eye on your skiing and riding partners, even in non-avalanche terrain; snow immersion will also be a threat today.
Kelly Elementary School is on a two-hour delay this morning and likely again tomorrow. Middle and high school students who live in Kelly, Moose and North Spring Gulch Road are also on a two-hour delayed start. Middle and High School student who live north of Moose are excused from classes until North Highway 89 reopens.
All other schools, including Moran Elementary will open on normal schedules today.
