JACKSON, Wyo. — Jackson Hole Writers and Shari Brownfield Fine Art (SBFA) have collaborated to offer Lunch Break, a free, monthly art and writing series for local writers and poets.

The series will begin on Thursday, Sept. 4, and be held on the first Thursday of every month from 12 to 1 p.m. at SBFA. The series will continue throughout the fall and possibly winter, as long as there is participation and interest, according to SBFA.

“Join us for this creative pause in the middle of your day — an hour to connect with art, words and community,” SBFA wrote via press release.

During each event, participants will spend 15 minutes of uninterrupted time with a featured artwork. SBFA Manager and writer Hunter Kettering will then lead a brief discussion and art history lesson. Writers will then have the remaining time to write.

The first Lunch Break will feature work by John Nieto (1936 to 2018), a pioneering Native American artist whose “bold” work reflects Indigenous figures, animals and cultural symbols.

“My work is a reaction to the world I live in,” Nieto said in a statement. “I don’t paint people or animals exactly as they are. I paint them as I feel them to be — as symbols of power, dignity and beauty. Color for me is not decoration — it is the heartbeat of the painting, the pulse that makes the subject alive.”

SBFA Owner Shari Brownfield told Buckrail that the gallery space is meant to shared with other nonprofits to help bring community members together.

“In this case, I think linking literary arts and the visual arts is a great thing,” Brownfield said. “There are so many different ways to look at art. I am excited about the partnership and helping people to have their own transformative experiences.”
