JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Eagle Scout William Carlson of Boy Scout Troop 268 in Jackson was named the State Winner of the 2018 Eagle Scout Scholarship Contest for the Wyoming Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Carlson is an eighth grader at Jackson Hole High School and is the son of Elizabeth Hammond Carlson, Vice Regent of the Davey Jackson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Chip White, President-elect of the Wyoming Society SAR and decorated Vietnam veteran, presented Carlson with the Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Trophyon behalf of the Wyoming Society. The presentation was made on Monday, May 7 at the Davey Jackson Chapter, NSDAR, Annual Youth Scholarship and Awards Banquet, held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jackson. Carlson’s Scoutmaster David Watson was present at the dinner along with many Wyoming SAR and DAR Members, local youth and their families.
Carlson’s winning Eagle Scout entry included an essay entitled, “My Ancestors in the Tory Invasion of 1780.” This invasion took place near Albany, New York during the American Revolutionary War. Carlson is a descendant of Revolutionary War Corporal Squire Patchin who served in the Ballston-Halfmoon District of the 12th Regiment of the Albany County Militia in New York, as well as Squire’s father, POW Private Jabez Patchin.
The Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Contest is open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. The application consists of three parts: Eagle Scout Contest Application Form; Four Generation Ancestor Chart; and a 500-word Patriotic Themed Essay. The competition is conducted in three phases, local (Chapter), State (Society), and National. The competition is usually entered through the Chapter level, but in some cases may be entered at the State level, as in Wyoming.
