MERIDIAN, Idaho – As Independence Day approaches, the Idaho State Police (ISP) are collaborating with the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety (OHS) to combat impaired driving.
From July 3 through July 10, law enforcement will increase efforts to prevent and apprehend drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
“Impaired driving doesn’t just risk the driver’s life; it endangers everyone in our community — our children, neighbors and friends,” Colonel Kedrick Wills said in a statement. “This Fourth of July, everyone should prioritize safety and responsibility. By planning for a sober ride, we can protect our loved ones and ensure everyone enjoys the holiday festivities safely.”
According to ISP, Independence Day celebrations fall with the 100 Deadliest Days on Idaho roads — between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends — marking fatal accidents. Preliminary data from OHS shows that 31 people have lost their lives in crashes in Idaho since Memorial Day weekend this year.
Tips for ensuring safe travel this Independence Day:
- Plan for a sober driver: Arrange for a sober ride before heading to a social event or a night out. This could be a friend, a family member or a local taxi service.
- Consider ride-sharing services: While rural areas might have limited ride-sharing options, look for services in nearby towns. Keep in mind areas with poor phone connectivity and plan accordingly.
- Host safe gatherings: If hosting a celebration that includes alcohol, offer non-alcoholic beverages and organize transportation for guests who need a sober ride home.
