BIG PINEY, Wyo. — The Horse Fire on Bridger-Teton National Forest’s (BTNF) Big Piney Ranger District has reached the size of 1,857 acres, according to a Friday update by BTNF.
The fire continues to spread in heavy, dry timber, according to BTNF. InciWeb reports 11% containment. Closures surrounding the fire remain in place to protect the 236 personnel working to battle the blaze.

“Dense timber stands with scattered meadows have been a challenge for crews,” BTNF noted on InciWeb. “Fuel sources have contributed to erratic fire behavior and lack of resources has made direct line construction difficult. The erratic winds have limited opportunities for firing operations during shifts in past days. These wind changes have also made holding current control lines difficult, as fire growth must be anticipated in all directions.”
Friday’s weather forecast calls for sunny skies and light to moderate winds with occasional gusts of up to 15 mph. Low relative humidity will continue to contribute to dry conditions, per InciWeb. On Tuesday, Teton Interagency Fire elevated the local fire danger to “moderate.”
