BIG PINEY, Wyo. — The Horse Fire has grown to cover 1,356 acres in the Big Piney Ranger District of Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF), according to InciWeb on Wednesday, June 18.

The fire was found on Friday and was burning at about 3 acres; on Sunday it had grown to 969 acres, according to updates by BTNF. The current report from InciWeb shows that the fire is 6% contained.

More than 200 personnel are working to put the fire out. The current status of the fire is: active, spotting and torching. BTNF implemented a closure surrounding the fire area earlier this week.

As outlined on InciWeb, this is today’s firefighting strategy: “The Horse Fire is split into two divisions, both divisions are using a mixture of direct and indirect tactics to control the spread of the fire. North area fire crews continue to prepare control line areas utilizing trails, roads and natural features to tie into the 2007 Horse Creek Fire burn scars. South area fire crews will utilize minimal lighting firing operations in the South Fork Horse Creek area to create a control line on the south area of the fire.”

Wednesday’s weather forecast is sunny with a high of 74°F, a 3% chance of precipitation and wind speeds of about 9 miles per hour. At night, clear skies can be expected, with temperatures dipping to 43°F and only a 1% chance of precipitation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yellowstone National Park increased its fire danger to “high.” On Tuesday, Teton Interagency Fire elevated the local fire danger to “moderate.”
