JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole History Museum and the Paris-based nonprofit Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions (AWARE) will host a free opening reception on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to showcase the new exhibit “Women Artists of the American West: Colorado and Utah, 1885-1935.” This exhibit is a sequel to the exhibit of women artists the History Museum hosted in January last year.
AWARE founder Camille Morineau will be at the opening to answer questions. The exhibit was curated by Morineau, art historian Lucia Pespane and Margaux Allen, and will feature seven women artists from the early 20th century.
The exhibit intends to illustrate the impact that women have had on the cultural landscape of the American West, even during a time in which some may believe they played a smaller role amidst the masculine and rugged western frontier.
“Across [the women’s] stories, we see a determination to create, connect, and boost women’s voices in the American West,” the Jackson Hole History Museum states. “By sharing these trailblazing artists’ stories, today’s women of the West can derive inspiration and the fortitude to live their own lives — in whatever forms their self-expression may take.”
