Head-on crash claims one in Buffalo Valley

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – A horrific crash on Highway 26/287 yesterday morning resulted in one fatality and a road closure lasting most of the day.

Ronald M. Campbell, 72, of Kansas, was killed when the vehicle he was driving struck head on a vehicle driven by Gina Pascale, 50, of Colorado. Neither motorist appeared to have applied brakes before impact. Highway Patrol also found no reason to believe either driver was distracted at the time of the collision.

The accident happened at about 8:55am on Wednesday, July 19. It involved a 2016 Subaru Forester, driven by Campbell, traveling westbound on US 26 and a 2017 Ford 500 passenger car driven by Pascale. For unknown reasons the Subaru crossed over the center lane line and into eastbound traffic where it collided head-on with the Ford. The Subaru then overturned one and a half times before coming to a rest on the vehicle’s roof in the westbound lane.

The highway was closed in both directions as victims were extracted and transported, and a significant amount of debris was cleaned up. Campbell’s wife, Debra, was transported by ambulance to St. John’s Medical Center. Pascale was air lifted to Eastern Idaho Medical Center. The road was reopened around 4:10pm.

The death of Campbell was the 76th fatality on state highways this year. The number runs about average for the past four years with the exception of 2016 when only 50 fatalities were recorded by this date.
