GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK — Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) is reminding backcountry users that avalanche risk in the Tetons remains considerable as this warm January comes to a close.

GTNP shared the news of two “recent close calls” in the park.

“Grand Teton National Park officials are aware of two significant avalanche accidents that occurred in the park in the last week,” GTNP posted to Facebook on Wednesday. The first avalanche incident occurred in the northern range, resulting in a complete burial of an individual who was unharmed. The second incident happened in the Apocalypse Couloir, resulting in an injured skier who hurt their knee escaping the avalanche to “prevent being swept over the icefall.”

GTNP advised checking conditions on the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center’s website before entering the backcountry. The park also points backcountry users to its own website for specific winter safety tips.

“Fresh powder turns are not worth your life!” GTNP said.
