GARDINER, Mont. — On Oct. 1, 2023, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC) announced the successful completion of their campaign to raise $6.25 million to buy out Crevice Mining Group, LLC and end a gold mining proposal along the Yellowstone boundary.
Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is now protected from the impacts of gold mining in perpetuity.
The $6.25 million purchased mineral rights, leases, mining claims, proprietary drilling data and mine plans on Crevice Mountain located near Gardiner, Montana. This region consists of 1,598 acres of critical wildlife habitat situated upslope from the Yellowstone River, along the northern Yellowstone border.
The campaign was launched publicly in May 2023 after GYC and Crevice Mining Group, LLC reached an agreement for the buyout.
In six months, GYC fundraising efforts yielded 1,345 gifts from individual donors in 47 states and seven countries.
“This is a remarkable achievement for everyone who loves YNP, its iconic wildlife, and beloved river,” GYC’s Executive Director Scott Christensen said. “We took a leap of faith by committing to a creative, win-win solution that protects the park and local community, while allowing the mining company to walk away. There is no question Yellowstone is more valuable than gold.”
