JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The state highway department has made the decision to remove so-called ghost bikes along South Highway 89 that began appearing early this spring. At least one white bike near South Park Road, and one red bike at Hoback Junction were removed from their locations.
Bruce Daigle, maintenance foreman for WYDOT, confirmed the agency made a decision to take the bikes away from the signposts they were chained to. He added that memorials may be placed along the highway after proper channels are pursued via a written request to and approval from the District 3 WYDOT office in Rock Springs.
As for the recent cross and accoutrements placed on Highway 22 near Skyline at the site of a head-on collision that took the life of Bob Arndt, Daigle says it will be allowed to remain for the time being but a permanent memorial will also have to go through standard avenues before it will be allowed to stay. It’s on borrowed time for now.
