JACKSON, Wyo. — R Park will celebrate the longest night of the year with a community celebration guaranteed to shorten the length of darkness and warm the heart. Plenty is happening after the sun goes down on Thursday, December 19 as the Annual Winter Solstice Celebration takes place from 5–8 p.m. at Rendezvous Park.
The festivities this year will include a community torch parade beginning at 6 p.m. and a warm bonfire, beginning at R Park’s new Welcome Plaza. A lantern making table will be available with all the supplies needed to create your own lantern. R Park’s pathways will be lit with ambient fire torches, and sledding is always encouraged.
“Winter is the start of many things, wildlife migrations, ski season, knoll sledding, and R Park’s Annual Winter Solstice,” said Jr Rodriguez, R Park Director. “This year we are excited to expand on the annual winter event by inviting families to make their own light-up lantern and join a procession around the park in order to enjoy the park trails at night and create a yearly community photo.”
Complimentary seasonal beverages and warm chili, cornbread, and mac and cheese will be served by Genevieve Catering. Jackson Hole Stillworks is sure to put you in the holiday spirit with a $5 specialty holiday cocktail. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Stilson Lot from where a complimentary shuttle will be running to-and-from R Park throughout the event.
R Park is a program of the Jackson Hole Land Trust. The public park is located at the intersection of Highway 22 and the Teton-Village Road (4270 River Springs Drive, Wilson). Participants are encouraged to use alternative forms of transportation to attend, such as START Bus or the community pathways.
Adult volunteers are always needed. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, email Ellie Stratton-Brook or call at 307-733-4707.
