Game, set, match: play tennis for diabetes

JACKSON, WY— How’s your tennis swing? Good enough to raise money for the St. John’s Hospital Foundation’s Diabetes Fund?

Trick question, tennis players of all abilities are invited to the 17th Steve Winograd Memorial Diabetes Tennis Tournament, July 20-22 at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club.

It’s a doubles tournament, and teams can be mixed, women’s, men’s, or parent/child. Cost is $100 per person, and $50 to play in a second category.

This year’s tournament is dedicated in memory of Art Frakt and Dean Stayner, avid tennis players who played in the Steve Winograd Memorial Diabetes Tennis Tournament for many years.

The tournament will conclude with a dinner and auction with featured speaker Tom Chapman, Sunday at 6 p.m. Chapman serves on the International Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the board of Viacyte, a stem cell encapsulation company working to free Type 1 and 2 diabetic patients from long-term insulin dependence. He lives in Jackson and is a principal with Teewinot Partners, LLC. The evening, generously sponsored by Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club, includes a silent and live auction with items like a Jackson Hole Mountain Resort weekend warrior pass, golf and tennis lesson, local experiences, and dining gift certificates. The dinner is complimentary for players and $50 for the public. Children 12 and under also eat for free.

Breakfast throughout the weekend is provided by The Bunnery. Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club is sponsoring lunch for players and spectators.

The Steve Winograd Memorial Diabetes Tennis Tournament, founded by tennis pro Eddie Kolsky, has raised over $300,000 for the St. John’s Hospital Foundation Diabetes Fund. Funds raised through the tennis tournament, and Dinner & Auction support diabetes education and medical care for community members living with diabetes. This year, funds have been used to support nutrition education and patient counseling, insulin and supplies for pumps, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, and financial assistance for local families to send their children to regional diabetes camps.

Tournament registration and tickets for the Dinner & Auction are available by calling 739-7517 or online at StJohnsHospitalFoundation.org/tennis2018.

Registration deadline is Wednesday, July 18th.
