JACKSON, Wyo. — Kids are now back in the classroom and Friends of Pathways shared safety tips for those biking to school.
Even before hopping on a bike seat, students should ensure that their bikes are working smoothly.
“Check the tires to make sure they have enough air … check your brakes and make sure they are working properly and if riding an e-bike, check to make sure that you have enough battery to get home,” Friends of Pathways said via Facebook on Friday, Aug. 30.
Friends of Pathways recommends the following safety precautions when riding the pathways and roads:
- Wear a helmet. Be sure to fasten the helmet with the chin strap.
- Be visible. Wearing bright clothing helps vehicles and other pathway users to see bikers.
- Be predictable and communicate. Use hand signals, keep right, pass left, ring a bell when passing and ride slowly.
- Be aware. Collision awareness is a critical skill for biking to school. Be alert to potential hazards including turning right, turning left, parked car doors, vehicle blind spots, etc.
- Choose the safest route. Choose pathways that separate vehicles and avoid busy streets.
“Thanks for riding your bike to school!” Friends of Pathways Executive Director Katherine Dowson told Buckrail. “Please wear your helmet, slow down and ring your bell when passing people. You never know who you may see out on the pathways so be nice and say ‘hi.’ It makes a world of difference.”
Safety helmets are required for all those 18 years and under when riding an e-bike in the Town of Jackson.
