JACKSON, Wyo. — Friends of Florence “Flo” McCall are throwing a celebration of life for the photographer this Saturday with an event that’s open to anyone who wants to remember her “in a joyous way,” according to Shannon Yarrow, one of the event’s organizers and McCall’s next-door neighbor.

McCall, who died in June at age 58 after being hit by a car while she was riding her bike, was remembered at a more traditional memorial service in July. Yarrow said the goal of Saturday’s event is to celebrate McCall in a way that she would’ve enjoyed, with a more uplifting gathering.

“She had an amazing impact in this community and we’re all very sad,” Yarrow told Buckrail. “We want to remember her in the most positive way we can.”

Since McCall loved cake, Yarrow estimated that around 40 attendees would be bringing cakes and cupcakes. Music will also be a big part of the celebration, as curated by McCall’s children. Some attendees will share remembrances between songs. Food trucks will be on site. Yarrow anticipates attendance upwards of 300 people on Saturday, and an atmosphere more in the spirit of an Irish wake.

“It’s easier to go through loss with others than by yourself,” Yarrow said. “Community helps.”

The event will be held in a tent at Phil Baux Park on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m.
