YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — On May 16, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC) will be hosting a webinar with director Scott Christensen for a conversation about working to stop destructive mines near Yellowstone National Park (YNP).

The webinar will take place from 4 to 5 p.m.

According to the event press release, “the same forces that created Yellowstone’s remarkable landscape also formed pockets of ore that continue to draw attention from mining companies looking to profit from their extraction.” While mineral extraction can be necessary, mining in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem threatens to displace wildlife and pollute rivers.

Christensen will go through the history of mine proposals next to YNP, including the various tools that have been used, or are currently being used, to fight the potential destruction.

The GYC has been raising money to buy out a mining company on the northern edge of YNP to eradicate the last gold mining threat to the park and the ecology. As of May 16, the GYC website says they’ve raised 63 percent of their $6.25 million goal to purchase the mining rights before Oct. 1.
