JACKSON, Wyo. — Brrrrr!

Subzero temperatures have been recorded across Wyoming with the arrival of an arctic blast, which Buckrail Meteorologist Alan Smith said would bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

Yellowstone National Park, no stranger to subzero temps, saw –40 degrees F at Old Faithful on Monday morning, Jan. 20, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Yellowstone National Park was documented at the Riverside Ranger Station in February 1933, when it reached –66 degrees F.

Northwestern Wyoming is under a Cold Weather Advisory issued by the weather service through Tuesday morning. In Jackson, the high is expected to reach 4 degrees F on Monday, with lows around –7 degrees and windchill of –20 degrees overnight. Keep an eye on the forecast here.

“The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” the Cold Weather Advisory reads. “Outdoor recreationists should dress in layers and cover exposed skin. … Use extreme caution if you plan to recreate outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checks on older family, friends and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.”

Neighbors across the Idaho border dealt with a dangerous combination of extreme cold and a power outage this morning.
