WYOMING — In an all-female Senate race, it was inevitable that Wyoming would send a woman to Washington. Last night Cynthia Lummis of Cheyenne became the first woman in Wyoming history to win a seat in the U.S Senate.

The Conservative Republican outpaced her opponent, Democrat Merav Ben-David, winning 73.1% of the vote compared to Ben-David’s 26.9%.

Senate-elect Lummis has had a long career in Wyoming politics, serving as a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1979-1983, and again from 1985-1993. She was also a member of the Wyoming Senate from 1993-1995. Lummis was the 27th Treasurer of Wyoming serving from 1999-2007.

Lummis represented Wyoming in the U.S House of Representatives, from 2009 to 2017. She did not seek reelection in 2016. Her seat was filled by Liz Cheney who won reelection last night. This was Lummis’s first bid for a seat in the U.S Senate.

She will be filling Mike Enzi’s seat, who is retiring. The other U.S Senate seat for Wyoming is held by Sen. John Barrasso who has served since 2007. Senate-elect Lummis will be sworn in on January 3, 2021.

Sen. Barrasso tweeted his congratulations, Tuesday night, “History was made tonight in WY. Congratulations to our first woman to be elected senator, Cynthia Lummis, & to Liz Cheney on their big wins. I’m looking forward to standing alongside them as we work to protect & promote WY.”
