JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Health Department announced Friday that a caution sign has been posted near Hunt Bridge on Fish Creek after high levels of Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli) was detected in water samples.

According to the County, analysis of water samples from Fish Creek signals “an increased risk of pathogen-related illness. It is recommended to avoid swimming and similar water contact activities,” the Health Department said via press release.

This is not the first time Fish Creek has sported an E. coli warning.

Teton District Health Officer Travis Riddell, M.D., M.P.H., ordered placement of the sign. The Health Department will continue to monitor Fish Creek through the recreation season, and the sign can be removed if testing indicates lower E. coli risks.

While many strains of E. coli are not harmful, some transmitted via food or water can cause illness when swallowed. Avoid swimming, float tubing or fully submerging the body in water where the bacteria is present. To minimize pathogen-related illness, avoid swallowing the water, rinse off with clean water after swimming, dry ears thoroughly with a towel after swimming and wash hands with soap and clean water before preparing or eating food.

Water quality awareness signs have also been posted on Flat Creek in Karn’s Meadow, Russ Garaman Park and Rafter J Ranch, according to the press release.
