JACKSON, Wyo. — Mark your calendar for the kick-off event to the winter backcountry season, the annual Avalanche Awareness Night, Thursday, Nov. 30 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Center for the Arts.
Now in its 24th year, “Avy Night” is a free event that aims to help skiers and riders sharpen their knowledge and understanding of safe winter backcountry travel, avalanche assessment skills and early-season snowpack while connecting with the local backcountry community.
And as always Avy Night will host an amazing raffle, featuring prizes from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Exum Mountain Guides, Mammut, Ortovox, Backcountry Access, The Hub Bicycles, Outdoor Research, Atomic, Wilson Backcountry Sports, Teton Mountaineering, Skinny Skis and more!
Raffle tickets are on sale now. Winners do not need to be present to win (although attendance is encouraged!).
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., programs start at 6:30 p.m., and include a panel discussion focused on first-person accounts of avalanche incidents, an in-depth examination of the state of the snowpack and a keynote presentation by Kevin Grove titled Discovering our Human Factors through Stories, Reflection, and Introspection. Grove is a Professor of Engineering and Physics at Central Oregon Community College, as well as a passionate snow scientist and Avalanche Educator.
The lobby at The Center will become a vendor fair of local ski organizations, avalanche education providers and avalanche safety companies to help get you up to date on current programs and the best new safety gear of the season. Take some time to stop in and chat with local organizations, find an avalanche course or learn about this year’s safety equipment from Backcountry Access, Ortovox and Mammut. Don’t forget to stop to chat with the BTAC about how to get the best and most current snowpack information.
Avy Night is presented by the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center Foundation (BTACF) with support from Skinny Skis, Teton Backcountry Alliance, Steve Romeo Memorial Fund, and Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR).
See you at Avy Night!
