JACKSON, Wyo. — The Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) is working to suppress a fire in the Big Piney Ranger District.

Dubbed “The Horse Creek Fire,” the blaze was reported at 12:39 p.m. on Monday, July 1 by Forest Service fire crews who noticed smoke coming from the Fish Creek drainage, according to a press release from BTNF. Helitack firefighters are working to control the burn, which was most likely caused by a lightning strike.

The fire is covering an area of half an acre and is located about 20 miles southwest of Bondurant, WY. BTNF posted a video of the fire on social media.

“We are looking at using some of the natural barriers in this confine and contain strategy to suppress this fire,” BTNF Forest Management Officer James Turner said in a statement. “[O]ur crews are using their expertise to reduce unnecessary risk to firefighters on a steep slope,” he said.

The wildfire comes less than a week after Teton Interagency Fire raised the fire risk from low to moderate in Bridger-Teton, along with Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge.

“Moderate fire danger doesn’t mean there is no fire danger,” said Turner. “We can still see fires burn and spread quickly on windy days.”

The Forest asked in a press release that people not call them to report smoke in the area.
