JACKSON, Wyo. — Following a barrage of complaints about messes left on local trails, Parks and Rec is reminding pet owners to clean up after their pets.

“There are always those people who don’t pick up after their pet, but this year, it seems to be quite substantial,” said Parks Manager Andy Erskine. “It’s not just that it is unpleasant for others to have to walk around, but it can have serious consequences on the environment.”

Animal waste can contaminate our watershed. Erskine said Emily’s Pond and Cache Creek are especially vulnerable to contamination. So cleaning up after your pet is not only kind, but good for our health and the environment.

Animal waste can also transmit diseases between dogs like parasites and infections.

Trail etiquette starts with being mindful of sharing public spaces, Parks and Rec said. When pet waste is left behind, it can ruin the experience for others. Proper pet waste disposal includes picking it up and throwing the bag away; leaving a bag on the side of the trail doesn’t count.

PAWS of Jackson Hole makes it easy by providing MuttMitts and waste-specific bins at each major trailhead.

Be a considerate trail user and always pick up after your pet.
