JACKSON, Wyo. — After entering into a contract for a new geographic information system (GIS) in the fall of 2025, Teton County began the transition to the new platform this week.

The Teton County Board of County Commissioners supported the move to a more recognizable platform with Terra GIS and Heintz Surveying and Engineering after Teton County Assessor Melissa Shinkle brought up the issue in October 2025. Shinkle said that the previous platform Esri lacked various tools, and one important tool had been broken for nearly a year. According to Teton County, Terra GIS is built on the platform that was originally developed by Greenwood Mapping, which supported the County’s GIS needs for nearly 20 years prior to 2023.

“Teton County entered a contract with Terra GIS and Heintz Surveying and Engineering last fall because their mapping platforms can be tailored to the County Assessor’s needs for property assessment while also offering a more user-friendly experience for the public,” reads a press release from Teton County. “The goal of these tools is to streamline staff workflows and make property-related information easier to access.”

Some features on the Terra GIS platform are still in progress, per Teton County. As staff and project partners work to refine the system during the transition, additional functionality will be added. The updated system can be accessed on the County’s website here.
