Grand Teton National Park Press Release
MORAN, Wyo. — Late on June 8, Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) staff were called to investigate a bridge collapse at Sheffield Campground, just outside the park in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Less than 24 hours later, an upcycled bridge had taken its place, ready for campers to cross.
The bridge over Sheffield Creek washed away, stranding five groups of campers as well as employees of a horseback riding tour company. Sheffield Campground is located near the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. GTNP’s team members sprang into action, locating a decommissioned bridge that could be resized for the Sheffield Creek space.
Working overnight, the staff cut the old bridge from 62 feet down to the necessary 45 feet, then spruced it up with new reinforcements including safety edges. By daybreak, the bridge was ready to be placed. Later that day, after being weight-tested, it was open to visitors.
“Huge thanks to Grand Teton’s facility maintenance crew and visitor and resource protection rangers for such a dedicated effort to collaborate with the Bridger-Teton National Forest and figure out a solution, engineer the bridge, and set it in place so quickly,” said GTNP’s Facebook post. “Great job!”
