Chance of flooding increases as temps rise Flood Flash flood Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news

WYOMING – Steady, warmer temps this weekend and into next week will cause tributary streams and creeks to rise, and will have rivers really hustling.

The National Weather Service issued a special bulletin yesterday for the coming weekend and into next week.

“Very warm temperatures over the next week will result in rapid mountain snowmelt, and significant rises on area creeks and rivers,” the advisory read. “Some rivers and creeks could begin to flood as early as Friday, but with better chances of flooding and associated impacts this weekend into next week. A flood watch for river flooding is in effect Friday through Sunday for the Wind, Green and Shoshone river basins.”

So far this spring runoff has been manageable given the enormous amount of snowpack still waiting to melt in the high country. The rapid snowmelt expected beginning today through the extended 7-day forecast will be more of a challenge.

The following tips might be important to remember:

  • Instruct folks in your counties in low-lying areas to make final preparations for flooding potential!
  • With mountain streams running highest in late afternoon/early evening, stream crossing will be most dangerous during those times of the day
  • Foothill communities will see the highest water levels in the late evening/early morning hours
  • Hikers and folks in areas where water is flowing should not cross into the waters! “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

Flood briefing results from June 2, 2017. (NWS)
