VICTOR, Idaho — Caribou-Targhee National Forest (CTNF) announced that fire crews have planned to begin prescribed fire operations on Thursday, Sept. 18, on the Teton Basin Ranger District. Work is expected to continue through the weekend as conditions allow.
“These prescribed fires are designed to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, regenerate aspen and support overall forest health — helping protect nearby communities, infrastructure and natural resources from the threat of wildfires,” CTNF wrote via Facebook.
Planned burn units include:
- Red Creek Unit 9: 533 acres, six miles west of Victor
- Red Creek Unit 5: 441 acres, seven miles west of Victor
- Red Creek Unit 3: 716 acres, seven miles west of Victor
CTNF advises visitors to watch for posted warning signs and be aware of hazards such as flames, smoke, falling snags and rolling rocks. Smoke could be visible in the surrounding areas. For real-time air quality updates, visit Fire.AirNow.Gov.
“If you encounter smoke on the road, please slow down and turn on your headlights,” CTNF wrote. “Weather will be evaluated before ignition, and activities may be canceled if conditions are not safe.”
CTNF’s website states that fire danger in the forest is considered high, as of Wednesday afternoon.
