WILSON, Wyo. — A bull moose and a START Bus collided on WY390 early Monday morning, resulting in the moose’s death, according to multiple sources.

The accident occurred around 6:15 a.m., according to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office. The moose was “on the move” near Sidewinders American Grill and “wasn’t that visible to the driver” in the pre-dawn light, according to Town of Jackson Director of External Affairs Susan Scarlata.

No injuries were reported by the driver or by the bus’ three passengers, Scarlata said. The bus was damaged but still driveable; Scarlata said its windshield will need to be replaced along with a few other fixes before it can be used for transporting passengers. After the incident, another bus retrieved the three passengers and resumed the travel route.

Scarlata noted that animals are on the move in the pre-dawn and evening hours, and recommended that drivers take extra caution during those busy times of day.

Transit Director Michael Toronto said he was saddened by the incident.

“They’re such majestic animals,” he told Buckrail.

Moose are active in this part of Wilson this autumn. Pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are encouraged to be extra vigilant. Drivers can consult these tips to be prepared if they ever find themselves in the unfortunate position of having hit an animal.
