GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK — According to Grand Teton National Park (GTNP), bull elk are about to start shedding their antlers.
Moose typically shed their antlers sometime between the end of December through January, GTNP’s Dec. 13 Facebook post says, although young bulls may retain their antlers as late as March.
The National Park Service (NPS) writes on its website that shedding their heavy antlers helps bull moose conserve energy and promotes easier winter survival.
In April or May, bulls will begin to grow new antlers, which grow through August.
