JACKSON, Wyo. — Campfire season has finally arrived.

Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) has announced that its personal use firewood permits are on sale as of Wednesday, May 15. Permit-holders can collect firewood through the end of the year.

According to BTNF, the price per cord is $7, with a minimum purchase of five cords (for $35). The maximum amount of firewood that may be purchased by each household is 10 cords. BTNF notes that this allows an individual to purchase a firewood permit for five cords, cut and haul that permit’s limit, and then return to a district office and purchase another five-cord permit to reach the permitted maximum amount per household.

Firewood permits are also available over the phone. Firewood hunters can call the BTNF office, register and pay over the phone, then have their permit and load tags mailed to them. The permit-holder must sign and date their permit to finalize the process prior to collecting firewood.

BTNF’s website notes that free wood might be available in some areas. Check the local District Office for location of these areas.

Permit-holders hoping to use tractors, horses, cable systems or anything other than a pickup truck, winch, chainsaw or ATV, must check with their local District Office and obtain written permission and attach that to the permit. Motorized travel on the forest is restricted to designated routes.

All forest off-road travel restrictions continue to be enforced, making each firewood hunter obligated to know where they are and to be mindful of the travel restrictions assigned to that location.

Last year, lingering snow delayed BTNF’s firewood season. The fire danger in the Teton Interagency Fire dispatch area is currently low. Check their website for conditions before starting a fire.
