Body found in Superior could be man missing since 2015

SWEETWATER COUNTY, WYO – Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, along with the county coroner, announced today they recovered a body in Superior, east of Rock Springs on Tuesday.

Sheriff Mike Lowell and Coroner Dale Majhanovich said the body was found through employment of a special cadaver search dog. Lowell would only disclose that the discovery is likely related to an active missing person case from 2015. The remains are being taken to Loveland, Colorado, for autopsy.

“We are reasonably certain of the person’s identity, but do not wish to speculate until the identification is confirmed,” Lowell said.

Sweetwater Sheriff’s Detective Dick Blust said he could not confirm the body was that of Darrell Sowder, 59, of Superior who went missing October 2, 2015. At the time, Sowder’s family believed the man would possibly cause harm to himself. Despite an extensive search, Sowder was never found.

Blust would also not say why a new search with cadaver dog was launched yesterday or if new information came to light. He said an official statement from the Sheriff’s Office would be forthcoming this Friday.
