JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Oregon man caught on video harassing a bison in Hayden Valley pleaded not guilty yesterday in federal court.

Raymond Reinke, 55, will remain in jail until his bench trial scheduled for August 23. US District Judge Mark Carman cited Reinke’s extensive criminal history as his reason for not setting a bond.

Reinke was arrested Thursday, August 2 in Glacier National Park after a spree of misconduct at three national parks. Reinke was first arrested in Grand Teton NP on a drunk and disorderly conduct charge. He was held in Teton County Detention Center in Jackson and released on bond the next day.

Three days later, Reinke was ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt in Yellowstone. Hours later he had his infamous run-in with the bison in Hayden Valley. After numerous visitors reported the incident, Reinke was cited that evening for disturbing wildlife but not arrested. The video surfaced on social media later the next day.

When authorities finally caught up with Reinke, he was arguing with a fellow restaurant patron at Many Glacier Hotel. Rangers took Reinke into custody and transferred him to Yellowstone Justice Center—a federal facility within the park complete with its own jail, court, and magistrate.

Reinke pleaded not guilty to charges in Yellowstone National Park that included disturbing wildlife and carrying an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. In Grand Teton charges included being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that endangers self or others, interfering with agency function, resisting arrest, and disturbing the peace.

According to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Reinke admitted to being a recovering alcoholic who fell off the wagon during a ‘last blow out’ trip with a friend through the national parks. That is a violation of his bond conditions on previous sentences back in Oregon and Washington.

During his initial hearing yesterday, Reinke did not say much except to express astonishment that federal authorities in Wyoming and Montana could or would track him down.

“That surprised the daylights out of me,” he is quoted by the Chronicle as saying. “You have long arms is all.”
