Are glaciers in the GYE really shrinking? Shepard Glacier Grand Teton National Park Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news
Shepard Glacier then and now. (USGS, Portland State Univ.)

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – A pretty cool (excuse the pun) talk on glaciers will happen tonight. Justin Snyder and Robin Thomas will explore the topic of glacial retreat in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE).

We hear conflicting reports all the time. Are the polar ice caps losing or gaining ice every year? The topic of “global warming” has now been neutered to “climate change” and the issue has become such a political football it’s hard to take a good look at the facts.

Are glaciers in the Rocky Mountains really in retreat? If so, what is causing it?

Snyder, with the Bridger-Teton NF, and Thomas, a geologist with GeoCorps, will present their findings as part of the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee-Glacier Working Group.

Recent news about the retreat of glaciers in Glacier National Park, Montana, received widespread attention from the media, the public, and scientists in general. Diminishing glaciers in the northern section of the GYE could be signaling change in the northern Rocky Mountains of the US.

In 2017 the USGS partnered with Portland State University to release a dataset describing the perimeters of the 37 named glaciers in Glacier National Park and two glaciers on the U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land.
