JACKSON, Wyo. — Got old paint thinners, leftover pesticides or toxic cleaning supplies taking up space in the garage? Teton County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection season begins Wednesday, April 16, and appointments are now open for all 2025 collection dates through mid-October.

According to a press release from Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling (TCISWR), collection takes place twice a month by appointment only at the HHW facility, located behind the Recycling Center at 3270 S. Adams Canyon Road.

TCISWR confirms that Teton County residents safely disposed of nearly 4,750 gallons of hazardous waste last year during the collection season, keeping harmful substances out of the landfill, waterways and ecosystem. That was an 18.7% increase over the previous year, “proof that more residents are doing their part to protect the community and environment.”

HHW includes materials that are toxic, corrosive, ignitable or reactive, including oil based paints, solvents, pesticides and cleaning products that require special disposal methods.

“This is an easy chance to dispose of common household items that can be dangerous if handled improperly,” Joe Chenault, recycling supervisor for TCISWR, says in the release. “It’s a relatively quick process and helps keep our residents, county staff, trash haulers and wildlife safe.”

The HHW facility accepts a wide range of items, including:

  • Oil-based paints and stains
  • Automotive fluids like anti-freeze and dirty motor oil
  • Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers
  • Flammable solvents and turpentine
  • Mercury thermometers, pool chemicals and toxic cleaning products
  • Fluorescent bulbs, aerosols and more

Latex (water-based) paint is not accepted, but can be dried with kitty litter and placed in the trash, with the empty cans recycled as scrap metal. The facility also cannot accept ammunition, explosives, asbestos or containers larger than five gallons.

Appointments are required and can be made online. Call (307) 733-7678 for specific materials questions or assistance with the scheduling app. Collection days for 2025 are:

  • April 16 and 30
  • May 7 and 21
  • June 4 and 18
  • July 2 and 19
  • Aug. 6 and 20
  • Sept. 3 and 17
  • Oct. 1 and 15

To prepare for an appointment, community members should bring materials in their original containers or clearly labeled and make sure lids are tightly sealed. Engines must be turned off at the drop-off site and drivers will remain in the vehicle — staff will assist with unloading items. No smoking or cell phone use at the facility.
