JACKSON, Wyo. — Since 1975, the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club (JHSC) and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort have kicked off the coming of spring with the annual Pole Pedal Paddle race.

After taking a year off due to Covid-19, the multi-sport race, formally known as the Rendezvous River Sports Karen Oatey Pole Pedal Paddle (PPP) is back on Saturday, Apr. 10, 2021.

Competitors are invited to race individually, on a team, competitively, or for fun.  (Either way, costumes are highly encouraged!) The PPP traditionally concludes with a large community celebration, but due to Covid-19, this year’s event will focus primarily on racing. The top individual male and female finishers in the racing category will each go home with $500 for first place, $250 for second, and $100 for third.  All competitors will also be entered into a huge raffle.

For 2021, the PPP will continue to offer the following five legs of the race.

  1. Ski/Snowboard giant slalom at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort
  2. Running leg from Teton Village to Shooting Star Nordic track
  3. Cross Country ski leg at Shooting Star Nordic track
  4. Cycling leg through Jackson Hole
  5. Paddling leg on the Snake River

PPP registration is currently open for teams and individuals.  Fees will increase on March 31 and April 2nd and registration will close on April 7th.  To learn more or to register, visit jhskiclub.org/polepedalpaddle.

Competitors who want to rent boats and learn about the state of the Snake River are encouraged to contact Rendezvous River Sports.

In 2015 the PPP was renamed for Karen Oatey after her passing.  Karen was a supporter of the JHSC and an avid participant in the PPP.  In addition to the event’s rebranding, Karen’s loving family established the Karen Oatey Scholarship Endowment Fund as a way to share Karen’s love for winter sports and honor her desire to give back to the community.  Karen’s Fund allows young athletes with financial needs to develop their own passion for winter sports and the outdoors through JHSC’s programming. Karen Oatey’s catchphrase, “Make it a great day!”, has become the ethos of the PPP. To learn more and to contribute, go to jhskiclub.org/scholarships.

Funds raised at the Rendezvous River Sports Karen Oatey Pole Pedal Paddle directly support the JHSC’s 500 local kids.
