A message from Teton County Search & Rescue.

JACKSON, Wyo. —  Everyone who lives in a mountain town eventually confronts the brute reality of backcountry risk, consequence, and loss. Yet, this winter was a particularly heavy one for our local, regional, and global backcountry communities.

That means that more people than normal joined what many quietly call “the club nobody wants to be in” – those left behind after a fatal accident or traumatic event in the mountains. To be that person left behind can be world shattering.

Teton County Search & Rescue (TCSAR) is acutely aware of how deeply our community hurts after a backcountry fatality. While we are not in the business of making that grief disappear, we are here to start the conversation about what community resources, clinical tools, and stories of survival might help.

If you have been impacted by loss or trauma in the mountains, or know someone who has, please join TCSAR at Black Diamond on Wednesday, May 20, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for this special conversation. Panelists include Sara Adamson, Brook Yeomans, and Doug Van Houten, with clinician Lynnette Gaertner as moderator. The panel will share personal perspectives, practical resources, and pathways for support in the wake of tragedy.

All are welcome whether you are navigating your own experience or showing up for others.

Thank you to Teton County Health Department for bringing this event to life as a part of their Mental Health in the Wild Series, and to Teton Interagency Peer Support and Mental Health and Recovery Services for providing professional, trauma-informed clinicians in the case you need someone to talk to during the event.
