YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A “significant law enforcement incident” has occurred in Yellowstone National Park’s (YNP) Canyon Village area, leaving one individual deceased, YNP reported Thursday morning.

According to the park, rangers were summoned in the early hours of Thursday, July 4, to respond to an individual who was wielding a firearm and making threats.

“When rangers contacted the individual, there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” YNP’s press release states. “The subject is deceased. We are not releasing the individual’s identity at this time.”

One of the park’s law enforcement rangers was injured in the incident. According to YNP, the ranger is in stable condition at a nearby regional hospital.

The FBI is investigating the situation with help from National Park Service special agents. An area around the Canyon Lodge complex remains closed while the investigation is underway.

YNP stated that there is no active threat to the public.
