YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Spring is in the air!
Plow crews at Yellowstone National Park (YNP) have begun the annual ritual of clearing snow from 180 miles of park roads before summer crowds arrive. The park shared a new video depicting what kinds of conditions the plow drivers encounter after months of snow gets compacted.
Back in the 1920s, huge crews were tasked with clearing snow from park roads by hand.
YNP recently ended its winter visitor season, during which most park roads were only open to oversnow vehicles including guided snowmobile groups.
The only park road open year-round is the one connecting the North and Northeast Entrances, both located in southern Montana. Starting on April 17, other entrances and internal roads will gradually start opening, with the West Entrance up first, followed by the East Entrance on May 1 and the South Entrance on May 8. All of those dates are weather-dependent, of course.
