ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy died in a weekend all-terrain vehicle crash near the Killpecker Sand Dunes in southwestern Wyoming.
Officials with the Wyoming Highway Patrol tell the Casper Star-Tribune that Gian Ortega was riding the ATV Saturday night at approximately 10:30pm when it went off Chilton Road in Sweetwater County and overturned.
The boy was not wearing a helmet and was thrown from the vehicle.
According to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene on County Road 17 (Chilton Road) in the area of Killpecker Sand Dunes for a report of a single-vehicle ATV crash. Investigation concluded a 2008 Arctic Cat 550 was traveling south on Chilton when for unknown reasons the ATV abruptly left the west side of the roadway onto the right shoulder embankment and overturned on its side.
Ortega was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County before succumbing to injuries sustained in the crash and pronounced deceased.
