WYOMING — A Fremont County child has died from influenza-related causes, according to a statement issued by the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) on Thursday. The agency said the death signals the seriousness of the illness.
No further details about the child were shared by the agency. WDH shared that 52 pediatric deaths have been reported nationwide this flu season (2025-2026), and added that 90% of the children who have died were not current on flu vaccinations.
“Unfortunately, the death of a Fremont County child has been reported to us this week,” WDH State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist said in the statement. “The H3N2 ‘A’ virus has been dominant so far this season. Historically, seasons with high levels of H3N2 have been associated with more severe influenza illnesses with higher numbers of hospitalizations and deaths.”
WDH urges everyone older than six months of age to get an updated flu vaccine every year. Harrist stated that even though flu season is already well underway, getting a flu shot now would still have benefits as the illness is expected to continue to spread for “at least a few more months.” She advises staying home when sick, covering the mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing, and frequently washing hands.
