JACKSON, Wyo. — It’s baby cow season!

Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer captured the cuteness of the valley’s newest residents earlier this month.

Drivers on US89 south of High School Road have the opportunity to see this season’s calves with their mothers on the west side of the highway. It’s best to pull over for a good glimpse. Keep an eye out for little bundles of brown and dots of white curled up in the grass.

Chase Lockhart, with the Lockhart Cattle Company, told Buckrail in 2025 that some heifers — first-time cow moms — need birthing assistance. He said that the ranchers check in on the pregnant cows at least once every two hours to ensure a healthy delivery.

Lockhart said that beef calves are usually allowed to stay with their mothers until they are 6 to 8 months old before being separated and weaned in the beginning of November.
