JACKSON, Wyo. — No, that’s not just alpenglow.

A severe geomagnetic storm lit up the skies over Grand Teton National Park in the wee hours of Tuesday, Jan. 20. Two Buckrail readers shared photos of the northern lights shining over the mountains, emitting a pink glow in the star-dotted sky.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the storm caused by a coronal mass ejection (large clouds of plasma and magnetic fields emitted by the sun) hit an 8.67 on an intensity scale of 0 to 9. Tuesday night might provide a fainter reprise, with additional activity in the forecast. Keep an eye on the aurora prediction here.
