JACKSON, Wyo. — Gazing upon the beautiful Teton Range is always a memorable experience, but the appearance of the Northern Lights over the mountains last weekend really put the experience over the top.
Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer stayed up late on Friday night to capture the incredible sight.

A severe geomagnetic storm allowed a large portion of the U.S. to see the aurora over the weekend.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, on Thursday, May 9, a massive sunspot cluster led to a number of coronal mass ejections. When plasma from the ejections interacts with upper levels of the Earth’s atmosphere, the famous colors become visible to Earthlings.
Photos taken with a long exposure allowed for even better views than were possible with the naked eye.

Jackson was also treated to a beautiful Northern Lights display last September, captured in photos by Buckrail readers. Learn more about the mythologies associated with the aurora here.
