JACKSON, Wyo. — Happy Presidents Day!
President Jimmy Carter, who died in 2024 at age 100, was one of many presidents to visit Wyoming’s national parks during his years in office.
Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) celebrated Carter’s milestone 100th birthday by sharing the above photo of Carter from his visit to the park many decades ago.
Carter visited GTNP with his family in August of 1978. According to the park, he spent the visit fly fishing, horseback riding and sightseeing.

His visit also included a boating trip around Jackson Lake, according to records held by University of California, Santa Barbara’s American Presidency Project.
At an informal press conference following the trip, one reporter asked Carter, “Do you like the Grand Tetons?”
“Gee, that’s something else, really beautiful,” Carter is reported to have said. “We went all around the island. We had a brisk wind when we went out, but there was just almost no wind coming in. It was nice.”
In 1987, Carter’s hometown became the host of its own National Park Service-managed site. Jimmy Carter National Historical Park welcomes visitors in Plains, Georgia.
