WILSON, Wyo. — Nicer weather is coming in fits and starts, and these fox kits outside of Grand Teton National Park are feeling the spring spirit as they romp through green grasses and dandelions.

Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer spotted the fox family den outside the park earlier this week. Wildlife viewers have counted as many as seven kits in this family.

These kits represent the spectrum of colors possible for a fox’s coat.

The red fox, Latin name Vulpes vulpes, has the largest distribution of any land mammal on Earth, apart from humans, according to the National Park Service.
This is a great time to glimpse foxes in the area. The nocturnal animal makes more daylight appearances in late April and May when kits arrive, spending more time foraging for enough food for the family.

Red foxes hunt using excellent eyesight, a keen sense of smell and acute hearing. Often they wait patiently for the sound of a mouse moving in grass or snow and then pounce; at other times, hearing movement underground, they dig quickly and locate the prey by its scent.

Fox kits are known to be curious and playful, especially with denmates.
