JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) is warning locals to be on the lookout for a spammy text message.

“There have been reports of mass txt [sic] messages going out to residents posing to be from official government agencies, such as Department of Motor Vehicles, warning about past due violations, threatening with legal actions and fines,” TCSO posted to Facebook this week. “Remember: This is a scam!”

TCSO advises keeping the following in mind:

  • Phone scammers can be very convincing. They can spoof legitimate numbers and use names of past and current law enforcement.
  • They will use intimidation tactics to scare people into quickly sharing personal and financial information.
  • They will pressure people to send them money through payment apps, gift card numbers, and Bitcoin. DO NOT click links or use QR codes sent via text.
  • Government agencies will never ask for payments through PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or other fast money transfer platforms.
  • Call TCSO Dispatch at (307) 733-2331 with any questions about a scam phone call or text.
  • If there has been no loss of money, fraud calls should be reported to IC3.gov or
FTC.gov where they are tracked on a federal level.
  • Always call the specific agency in question directly using publicly available numbers if something causes concern.
