WILSON, Wyo. — Today is April Fools’ Day, but avalanche safety amid new snowfall is no laughing matter.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) announced plans to close Teton Pass on Thursday, April 2, at 10 a.m. for avalanche mitigation work. This means parking will not be allowed between the Wilson and Idaho closure gates beginning at 8 p.m. tonight.

“Backcountry users should be aware that avalanche mitigation will be occurring on terrain North of the highway,” WYDOT stated. “WYDOT asks that backcountry users avoid this terrain until after mitigation operations are complete and the road is open. People accessing that terrain will be exposed to personal risk and may delay the opening of Teton Pass.”

Conditions could force an earlier closure, WYDOT said. See WYDOT’s Teton Pass webcam for conditions, and the travel map for additional details. Drivers can sign up for 511 Notify alerts from the agency here.
