JACKSON, Wyo. — Demonstrations commemorating the people fatally shot by Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis this month will be unfolding nationwide this weekend, including events in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley.

On Friday, Jan. 30, some businesses and individuals will be participating in a general strike. Those who stay home from work or school and/or decline to shop on Friday aim to disrupt the economy and protest the large corporations that work with ICE.

“The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN,” the statement on NationalShutdown.org reads. “On Friday, January 30, join a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping.”

On Saturday, Jan. 31, an “ICE out” protest is scheduled to be held on Town Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This gathering follows multiple other ICE-related protests held downtown over the past year. According to the event’s website, organizers are committed to nonviolent action and de-escalation of any potential confrontations.

Over in Idaho, a group of cyclists will gather in Driggs for a community memorial bike ride in honor of Alex Pretti, one of the people fatally shot by ICE. Pretti was reportedly an avid cyclist; his home bike shop, Angry Catfish, organized a memorial ride in Minneapolis, and cycling communities as far away as Australia will participate in solidarity.

Interested cyclists are encouraged to meet in front of Driggs City Hall at noon on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. departure.

“All riders and all bikes welcome!” event organizers shared with Buckrail via email. “Fat or studded tires recommended, but bring whatever you have! Come as you are! The ride will be an easy, family-friendly, no-drop ride focused on unity, respect, and showing up for each other as a cycling community.”
