JACKSON, Wyo. — At the start of Jackson’s Town Council meeting tonight, Mayor Hailey Morton-Levinson will read two proclamations in support of two causes, according to press release from the town.
The first proclamation, in support of Pride Month and LGBTQIA community members, addresses the “Principle of equal rights for all people” that now includes the LGBTQIA community in the Town of Jackson.
The proclamation stresses the importance of LGBTQIA history including the 1969 Stonewall Riots that occurred in New York city. These historical riots occurred across the country and were often led by transgender women of color to fight against discriminatory laws.
The proclamation focuses on ensuring “visibility, dignity and equality for LGBTQIA people,” and acknowledges the “need for education and awareness” to end discrimination and prejudice.
The second proclamation pertains to National Gun Violence Awareness Day which focuses on the “country’s gun violence epidemic.”
National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed nationally on the first Friday in June and the following weekend each year. It is also known as “Wear Orange Day.” This day was established after a child was shot and killed in Chicago in June 2015.
Due to recent tragedies and all events related to gun violence, the proclamation encourages everyone to commit to “reduce gun violence and utilize others ways that other countries have succesfully met this challenge.”
