TETON VILLAGE, Wyo. — Once a scrappy newcomer studying the songs of Guy Clark and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hayes Carll is now the elder statesman of catchy, singer-songwriter truth-telling that leans country, often with a dose of humor, and always with his homey Texas drawl. Carll returns to Teton County this Wednesday at the Mangy Moose. Another veteran songster, Ryan Monbleau, opens.

Like his heroes, Carll has always been able to convey important themes in his music versus simply providing an entertaining five-minute song. He has earned his keep, too, earning a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Country Song (“Chances Are”) and multiple Americana Music Association honors including Song of the Year and nominations for Artist of the Year (2011, 2012).

Songwriters at this level are not content with their output. On his latest release, We’re Only Human (2025), Carll navigates the exhausting cycle of negative thought habits and the struggle to break free from the trap of constant judgment — both of others and ourselves. Following the songwriter into his late 40s, the record charts a path out of this “doom cycle” toward personal growth. Each track represents a distinct step in the journey of self-betterment.

Road warrior and prolific wordsmith Ryan Montbleau brings soulful blend of folk, Americana and R&B, anchored by his agile vocals and introspective, often witty storytelling. His collaborations explain much about his reach as an artist — Mavis Staples, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Mike Gordon, Trombone Shorty, Galactic, Ani DeFranco, and Martin Sexton. Don’t be late; consider this a co-bill.

Hayes Carll with guest Ryan Montbleau, 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Mangy Moose. Doors at 8 p.m. $29. MangyMoose.com.
